Callers
Who the call appears to come from. Create a profile with any name and number, withhold the number entirely, or pick a real contact so Android shows their photo.
Create a caller profile
-
Open the Callers tab and tap +
Choose New caller to start from scratch, or From contacts to copy a device contact into a profile.
-
Enter a name and a number
Anything you like. The number is shown on the call screen and saved in the call log exactly as you type it, so a realistic format for your country ("+1 212-555-0143") helps.
-
Mark it as a favorite (optional)
Favorites appear first when scheduling a call, so your two or three go-to callers are one tap away.
Self Call comes with four sample profiles (Private number, Mom, Boss and Doctor's office) that you can edit or delete.
Private-number calls
Leave the number field empty and the call arrives as a genuinely withheld call. Your phone shows its own "Private number" or "Unknown" label on the call screen and in the call log, exactly as it does for a real withheld call. The profile name is only used inside the app.
Use a real contact
When scheduling, tap Select from device contacts. Self Call asks for the Contacts permission the first time. Contacts are read only while the picker is open, and only the contact you select is saved (name, number, photo), on your phone and nowhere else.
Because the number matches a saved contact, Android treats the call like a real one from that person: it shows their contact photo and uses the ringtone assigned to them, if any.
Why a caller's photo does not appear
The incoming-call screen is drawn by Android's Telecom system, not by Self Call. Android looks the caller's number up in your device contacts and shows that contact's photo. The app cannot place a picture there itself.
So a photo only appears when the caller is saved in your device contacts, with a picture, under the same phone number. Photos attached to purely fake profiles inside the app are shown inside the app only. To get a photo on the call screen, save that caller as a real contact with the same number and add a picture to it.
Limits
The free version holds up to 6 caller profiles. Picking a contact while scheduling a call does not create a profile, so it does not count against that limit. The full version removes it.
